Affinity Bank’s Focus on Affordable Housing and Family
Services Promises Hope and Help in the Year 2000
More homeless families will be getting the help they need in the
year 2000 through programs like Transition House, an emergency shelter
and career development program, receiving ongoing sponsorship by
Affinity Bank, headquartered in Ventura, California.
"Transition House has a 68% successful "transition"
rate helping homeless families move into economic, self-sufficient
and permanent housing. We intend to help them keep growing, because
this is a wonderful service to people and the community" according
to bank president, Michael McGuire.
The Transition House program provides all three legs of the stool
necessary for economic self-sufficiency: Temporary housing and shelter,
family support services, and education and career development.
The housing and shelter module includes a 70-bed emergency shelter
or "first step shelter". Twenty-two units of longer term
transitional housing assist individuals who need additional time
to get back on their feet.
The family supportive services include counseling and career tracking
for adults, as well as licensed infant care and after-school programs
for school-aged children of Transition House families.
The career-development program runs in conjunction with Santa Barbara
City College, one of California’s top city colleges, providing
a wide array of educational programs leading to permanent career
opportunities.
Affinity Bank’s president, Michael McGuire, has been a member
of the Transition House Board for 10 years.
